A date field that's formatted as MM/DD/YYYY in your CRM might need to be ISO 8601 for your database. A phone number field might contain letters, special characters, or be missing a country code. An email address might be malformed or belong to a disposable domain. The solution is to validate and transform data at every integration boundary — the points where data moves from one system to another. Add validation steps that check data before passing it to the next API call, transform formats to match the target system's expectations, and reject records that don't meet your quality standards. This defensive approach catches problems early and prevents garbage data from propagating through your entire automation pipeline.

Monitoring and observability for production workflows

Once your automations are running in production, you need visibility into their health and performance. Set up monitoring for every production workflow that tracks: execution frequency and timing, success and failure rates, average execution duration, and data volume processed. Configure alerts for anomalies: a workflow that usually runs 50 times per day suddenly running 500 times, a success rate that drops below 99%, or execution times that spike unexpectedly. Use the monitoring data to continuously improve your automations — identify bottlenecks, optimize slow steps, and retire workflows that are no longer needed.
